Sydney, Australia – June 8, 2023 — ARIA Research Pty Ltd, a Sydney-based deeptech assistive technology company that has developed a non-invasive wearable device using artificial intelligence and machine vision to deliver sight through sound for blind people, is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a 2023 Tech23 startup..
"We are honored to be recognized by Tech23 and included among the innovative startups in the Tech23 program," said Robert Yearsley, CEO of ARIA Research. "We are looking forward to taking part in this event in July and joining our fellow thought leaders, radical innovators and creative solution developers in the Australian tech community.”
Tech23 celebrates Australia's young, high-growth tech companies that demonstrate promising innovations with the potential to address significant challenges on a global scale. Cicada Innovations, Australia's leading deep tech incubator, supports and fosters these innovative startups, providing them with access to expert advice, strategic direction, and invaluable networks.
ARIA is the world's first commercially scalable Non-Invasive Bionic Vision System. The device facilitates agency and independence for blind and vision-impaired people by providing a functional vision analog via sound. ARIA is non-surgical and is a lightweight, attractive, all-day device.
ARIA leverages and augments blind users’ natural abilities to identify and locate objects based on the sounds they make by virtually sonifying visible, but normally silent objects (e.g. pole, bench, cup, etc.) in the users’ surroundings, delivering a practical and easily-usable analog to the function of vision - i.e. a detailed real-time distal spatial and semantic understanding of one’s environment. ARIA helps blind users maintain orientation, identify and locate objects at a distance, coordinate proprioceptive reach, and increase confidence in wayfinding and obstacle avoidance. ARIA can substitute much of what human sighted guides presently provide (the current solution for >90% of blind people) but with vastly greater availability and lower cost.
The ARIA device takes the form of smartglasses that have cameras/sensors, speakers and processing built into them. Using the cameras/sensors, ARIA creates a virtual 3D, real-time model of users’ immediate environments. This 3D model is then used to generate a life-size, real-time audio information overlay of a user’s physical environment delivers an analog to the function of vision.
